Three greyhounds

Torn Stories begin with an idea to express a belief or passion. It’s a meditative, thoughtful process starting with a background torn from paper. It then becomes layered with more deliberately torn shapes that start to tell a story. This is when the magic begins and the piece developes to inspire ideas, telling me what it needs as it morphs into a picture of expression. Printed words and symbols are sometimes used and slightly hidden to help tell a clearer story. I use recycled canvases, old magazines, books, calendars, sheet music and anything that has colors with interest and texture. A sky is not made from a picture of a sky. Skin and hair can be found from ads about food or from clothing on a model. Mostly these “paintings” come out looking colorful, bright, vibrant and rich. These pictures are not only layered with torn paper but with love, discovery, imagination, purpose and humor. The end piece is open to the interpretation of the observer as I believe art has different meanings to each individual.
