Last week, I participated in the most important gathering of greyhound advocates ever held in the United Kingdom! Organized by Mark Ruskell MSP, the first Scottish Greyhound Roundtable included the leaders of OneKind, SAGE, Say No to Greyhound Racing, the Scottish Society for the Protection of Animals, and the League Against Cruel Sports Scotland. Vanessa Waddon of Hope Rescue also came to share her valuable campaign insights from Wales.

While in Edinburgh, I met with key lawmakers like Christine Grahame Convener of the Cross Party Group on Animal Welfare and Finlay Carson, Chair of the Rural Affairs Islands and Natural Environment Committee. His committee has taken evidence and will soon be making a recommendation to the full Scottish Parliament on the future of greyhound racing. We particularly discussed our new poll showing that 60% of Scots want to see dog racing end and 75% do not believe it is a worthwhile industry.

My trip actually began with a visit to Thornton Stadium, which is the last operating track in the country. Unlike the commercial tracks found in other parts of the world, this decayed and dilapidated “flapping” track is not regulated. Critically, there is no veterinarian on site and no official humane standards at all. The number of injuries and deaths is unknown.

The good news is that there is a wonderful group called the Scottish Greyhound Sanctuary which is working to ensure that any dogs released from Thornton find good homes.
