VICTORY! Last dog race held in Arkansas on Saturday

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the latest installment of our Lawmaker Spotlight series in which we celebrate the key world leaders making a difference for the greyhounds! Please meet Cassy O’Connor, Leader of the Tasmanian Greens. A former journalist and community activist, Ms. O’Connor is one of the most thoughtful and informed opponents to dog racing Down Under.

Of the more than sixty dog tracks in Australia, three of them are in Tasmania. On International Dog Day, Ms. O’Connor decried an industry that “breeds dogs to die” while receiving taxpayer subsidies in the millions. In June, Ms. O'Connor submitted the most popular e-petition ever in Parliamentary history on behalf of GREAT, Let Greyhounds Run Free and RSPCA Tasmania, along with Dogs' Home of Tasmania, CPG, Kingsborough Dog Walking Association and Huon Valley Dog Walking Association.

The petition of the undersigned Citizens of Tasmania draws to the attention of the House:

  • The inherent animal cruelty and suffering of greyhounds in the publicly-funded racing industry;
  • That opposition to the cruelty in the greyhound racing industry cuts across politics, and that greyhounds are rescued and re-homed by Tasmanians of all political affiliation;
  • That it is opposed by the majority of taxpayers and by the RSPCA; and
  • That as pet owners, we will use our purchasing power and influence to send a message to retailers, veterinary practitioners, pubs and all businesses supporting and enabling greyhound racing.

Petitioners therefore request that the House call on the government to end the taxpayer subsidy of the inherently cruel greyhound racing industry.

Ms. O’Connor knows that her government is on the “wrong side of history” and has vowed to “always be a voice in Parliament for these gentle sensitive dogs who fall victim to a dreadful industry.”

Please join me in thanking Ms. O’Connor for her forceful and relentless leadership. Be sure to let her know your state and country and if you have a greyhound of your own. Then please follow her on FB, Twitter and Instagram.

For the greyhounds,
