ACT NOW! Help end dog racing subsidies in West Virginia

Dear Friends,

Over the next few days, West Virginia lawmakers will vote on two important bills to end greyhound subsidies, decouple dog racing from other forms of gambling, and provide funding for greyhound adoption. We need your help today to pass these bills and end greyhound cruelty!

Right now the dog racing industry is receiving $15 million in annual subsidies, money that should instead be used for important state programs like education, health care and law enforcement. Also, because of a state dog racing mandate, casinos are required to hold greyhound races. We have an opportunity to fix these problems, and help thousands of dogs!

Please call each of the lawmakers below, and urge them to Vote Yes on Senate Bill 437 and House Bill 3107.

Please ask these lawmakers to Vote Yes and remind them that:

  • Greyhound racing should not be subsidized. These funds should instead be used for important state programs like education, health care and law enforcement.

  • Greyhound breeders have made false claims about jobs and the economic impact of dog racing. This is a small industry with virtually no economic impact beyond the subsidies it takes from state coffers.

  • Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane. According to state records, more than 7,000 greyhound injuries have been reported at West Virginia dog tracks since 2008 including 2,604 dogs that suffered broken bones and 369 greyhounds that died. This cruelty should not be rewarded.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to help thousands of greyhounds in the Mountain State. Please call all of these lawmakers today!
