Dear Friends,
Over the last week, both the West Virginia Senate and House have approved SB 437, a measure that will repeal $15 million in annual subsidies and phase out greyhound racing in the Mountain State by July 1. Additionally, the bill creates a $1 million adoption trust for the greyhounds! This is a win for the state’s taxpayers and big win for the hounds.
|
The bill has just been transmitted to Governor James Justice. Please contact him now, and urge him to sign SB 437 into law!

Let him know that:
-
Greyhound cruelty should not be mandated and the current subsidies should instead be redirected to important state programs like education, health care and law enforcement.
-
Commercial dog racing is now illegal in 40 states. Republican Governor Doug Ducey of Arizona issued a press release in May when he signed his state’s legislation, stating that “It’s heartening to see that these beautiful greyhounds will soon be off the track and in loving homes.” The same can now happen in West Virginia!
- Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane. According to state records, more than 7,000 racing injuries have been reported at West Virginia dog tracks since 2008 — including 2,688 dogs that suffered broken bones and 376 greyhounds that died.
|
Thanks to everyone who wrote to their lawmakers so that the greyhounds could reach this important step. Now, please help them cross the finish line by contacting Governor Justice today.
