This humane legislation was designed to phase out greyhound racing in the Mountain State by July 1 and repeal $15 million in annual subsidies to the industry. Additionally, a $1 million adoption trust was included to help the greyhounds go from cages to couches!
Right now, it is not known if the Legislature will honor the veto, as it may have been filed past the time required by law. Please stay tuned for ways that you can help as this situation is clarified.
For the moment, we would like to give thanks to everyone who worked to help the greyhounds by making calls, sending e-mails and sharing our alerts over the last few weeks and days. This includes all of our friends at the Humane Society of the United States, the National Humane Education Society and the ASPCA. Finally, we offer our deepest gratitude to our very determined lobbyist Conrad Lucas.

Executive Director Carey Theil and GREY2K USA lobbyist Conrad Lucas worked all day fighting for our bill!

Change always comes slower than we like. It took three ballot questions and ten years to pass a prohibition on dog racing in Massachusetts, eight years in Rhode Island and New Hampshire. The last state to close down racing, Arizona, also required a ten year effort!
But no matter how long it takes, we will keep working for the greyhounds and I hope that you will, too!
