Dear Friends,
Did you know that racing greyhounds are fed a diet of diseased meat?
|
This week, Mike DeForest of Florida’s WKMG-TV reported that one dog died at the Sanford Orlando dog track and 72 became ill after eating raw “4-D” meat derived from downer animals. Sadly, this is only the latest case of diseased food causing the deaths of innocent greyhounds.
|
It wasn’t long ago that two dogs at the Daytona track were found dead after being exposed to an array of toxins linked to “bad meat.” Racing Division investigators wrote that the first greyhound, Cherokee Rock, was found deceased with “a large pool of blood from (his) rectum.” A second dog named Long Shadow was alive and in shock. But it was too late to save him. The rest of the kennel’s 97 dogs were found retching and heaving in their cages.
|
This so-called bad meat is actually the standard for racing greyhounds all across the United States and around the world. Mixed with fillers, this disgusting food can be riddled with Salmonella and E. coli. Gentle greyhound systems simply cannot tolerate it and dogs collapse from “blow-out.” Industry handbook Care of the Racing and Retired Greyhound explains that the meat of dead, dying, diseased and disabled livestock is used because “it is the most economically feasible for the greyhound industry at this time.”

If you are as disgusted as I am with this callous industry, please join us by taking action to help greyhounds through outreach and advocacy. From hosting a rally to signing petitions to sharing our email alerts, each of us can make a difference for greyhounds! You can also follow us on Facebook or Twitter to stay updated on our campaigns and help raise awareness about dog racing cruelty.
When Christine Dorchak and Carey Theil founded GREY2K USA in 2001, there were 49 tracks in fifteen states. But today, just nineteen tracks remain in six US states and they are now working with allies around the world to end this cruelty wherever it persists.

Their work is saving lives. Thank you for being a part of this humane mission to give greyhounds like me the second chance they deserve.
