Did you hear the news?

Dear Friends,

Every week in June, a story about our fight to end the cruelty of dog racing hit the press — in print, on the radio and television, plus online!

Last week, The Washington Post explored the “confounding situation” that 7,000 greyhounds are racing merely as loss leaders for other, more popular forms of gambling at racetracks and “to keep the poker rooms full in Florida.” Citing state reports, reporter Duncan Strauss wrote about concerns that racing dogs are kept confined for 20-plus hours each day and that they sustain frequent injuries, including head trauma and broken legs. Nearly 400 greyhounds have died since May 2013.

WFTV 9 Investigates greyhound injuries at Sanford Orlando Kennel Club

Just last night, WFTV Channel 9 aired a story showing that 8 dogs suffered injuries at the Sanford Orlando dog track in May, and that one dog died. “Pickler” was a 2-year-old greyhound who crashed into the track rail and suffered a deep laceration on her upper thigh. Rather than be given medical care, she was destroyed!

It was at the urging of the Committee to Protect Greyhounds that Seminole County Commissioners passed an ordinance for the track to disclose injury information like this for the first time. It is no surprise that desperate kennel operators are now trying to wiggle out of this requirement! For the moment, listen to a June 2 debate on WMFE Radio between our Executive Director, Carey Theil, and Florida greyhound breeding proponent Jack Cory. Then, if you have not done so already, please sign our petition to let Florida dogs go free.

Finally, our President Christine Dorchak was profiled in BostonVoyager Magazine and also featured in VegNews online last week. The word is out that dog racing is cruel and inhumane and must end.  Thanks to all of you for being part of this “greyt” team!

For the greyhounds,
