Greyhounds Win Victories in NH, Calls Needed

Dear Friends:

This morning, we are closer than ever to reaching our goal of ending the cruelty of dog racing in New Hampshire!

Last week lawmakers in Concord put the final touches on the state budget, which will be voted on this coming Wednesday. And thankfully, the greyhounds won several key victories in the budget fight! These victories include:

  • The budget includes a new law that will allow racetracks to offer simulcast gambling without holding dog races. This means that dog racing will likely end at the Lodge at Belmont, and could also end at Seabrook.

  • A proposal to prop up dog racing with slot machines was defeated.

  • A separate proposal to prop up dog racing with “instant racing” machines, gambling devices similar to slot machines, was also defeated.

  • Under a new law, dog racing gamblers must now pay a 10% tax on all gambling winnings larger than $600.

Finally, even though a proposal to require that dog tracks pay for the cost of their own regulation was defeated, in an ironic twist of fate the greyhounds still won. Because even though our proposal failed, the budget for the Racing and Charitable Gaming Commission does not contain funding in 2011 to regulate dog racing. In other words, their budget was written as though our proposal had passed.

What this all means is that greyhounds won last week, and the dog tracks lost. As a result, it is more likely than ever that dog racing will soon end in the Granite State.

However, our work is not yet over. According to published reports, the budget vote will be extremely close. If the budget is defeated, these victories will be lost. Further, dog track owners will be given another chance to lobby for slot machines and other handouts!

Please contact your State Senator and State Representative(s) today and ask them to vote YES on the budget. (Click here to find your legislators’ contact information.) Tell them that the budget is a step in the right direction when it comes to ending the cruelty of dog racing, and you would like their support.

Thanks to everyone who has helped with this historic victory. We will keep you updated as things develop further!

For the greyhounds,
