Tracks are closing around the globe

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to announce that four tracks in three countries are dropping dog racing!

That’s right, last week began with an announcement from Miami’s Flagler dog track that it is getting out of the business! One of our nation’s original dog tracks, Flagler was once a popular haunt for famous celebrities like Frank Sinatra as well as sports legends Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig. But thankfully, times have have changed and greyhound exploitation is no longer popular or acceptable.

Then, over the weekend Great Britain’s Hall Green Stadium of Birmingham announced its closure. The final dog race was held on Saturday, July 29, the track's 90th anniversary. This downtrodden facility once owned by a Prime Minister’s daughter, is now set for demolition and redevelopment for needed housing. This great change follows the March 25 shuttering of London’s last dog track at Wimbledon.

Citing declining interest, another American dog track has also decided to end dog races! On August 19, Mobile Greyhound Park will follow Victoryland by holding its last live races, leaving just one remaining track in Alabama. If you would like to adopt one of the 400 available greyhounds there, please contact Darla Dean of Alabama Sighthound Adoptions right away.

Finally, China’s Canidrome, deemed the worst dog track in the world, has confirmed that it will end dog racing by July 21, 2018. Meanwhile, GREY2K USA Worldwide and Pet levrieri of Italy are working with Albano Martins of ANIMA Macau to provide for the safe release of the greyhounds. Three dogs have come out so far! Learn more on our joint Facebook page and if you represent a group willing to take in Canidrome dogs, please let us know.

Dogs should only run for fun DONATE

All this good news means that we are getting closer and closer to the happy day when the cruelty of dog racing finally ends.  As part of our Greyhounds Should Only Run for Fun campaign, GREY2K USA research director S. Matt Read will be running the Quebec City Marathon on August 27. In honor of all the wonderful developments for greyhounds in 2017, he hopes to raise $2,017. Please chip in and help him reach his goal!

For the greyhounds,
