Hundreds of greyhound adoption groups have been formed across the county in order to find homes for dogs that have been discarded by the racing industry. As part of our continuing series, we would like to spotlight the wonderful work of Scooby.

Dear Friends,

Scooby has been protecting animals in the Medina del Campo area and is the largest animal shelter in Spain. Thankfully, there is no commercial dog racing in the country, but “galgos” (Spanish greyhounds) are used for hunting and then discarded en masse each year.  Without founder Fermín Pérez and the Scooby volunteers, they would have no hope.

After twenty years of hard work and successful advocacy, Scooby Medina is facing perhaps its greatest challenge ever. Recently, GREY2K USA received the following urgent message:

The situation at Scooby is absolutely desperate. Our shelter is completely full with 500 dogs and our adoptions have decreased significantly due to the economic crisis. We urgently need to find homes for our animals.

In the past we have been able to rescue dogs from the surrounding region and even as far down as the south of Spain, but we are not able to do this anymore. The government has decided not to renew its monthly support of our efforts as of Aug 31. This means that galgos will no longer have the safety of Scooby. At the moment, we have enough money to run the shelter for five more months.

This has now become a situation of life and death for all the animals, including Scooby as we know it.

For those of you who can make an adoption - please let us know. We are ready to make transports as soon as the dogs are chosen and prepared. For those of you who can't foster or adopt, please consider a donation.
