A Message to Massachusetts Greyhound Advocates

Special Message to Grassroots Activists from GREY2K USA Executive Director Carey M. Theil

Dear Friends,

Regretfully, I must report that the greyhounds did not win at the State House yesterday. Despite all of your efforts, greyhound simulcasting will be allowed to continue in Massachusetts. In fact, dog racing supporters used a procedural tactic to defeat our amendment without even allowing a vote!

Of course, we are all deeply disappointed by this result. It sends the message that dog racing supporters on Beacon Hill will not listen to the will of the voters, and are out of touch with mainstream humane values.

But please remember that -- thanks to you -- greyhounds are no longer living in cages at Massachusetts racetracks. Question 3 was an historic victory and thousands of dogs were given a second chance at life thanks to its passage in 2008.

Boston Commons RallyI do not immediately know what the next step will be in seeking full implementation of the Greyhound Protection Act. I do know that we will continue to look for opportunities to pass our amendment into Massachusetts law, while focusing our energies on the seven states where dog racing remains live.

I hope you will be with us for these efforts!

In closing, I want to thank all of you for your hard work for the greyhounds. Please join me in thanking Representative Cheryl Coakley-Rivera for her leadership on this issue. She can be reached at:

For the greyhounds,
