Welcome to the third installment of our Lawmaker Spotlight series in which we introduce you to key world leaders making a difference for the greyhounds! Meet Mark Ruskell, Greens Member of the Scottish Parliament representing Fife, the home of Scotland’s last dog track. As his party's Spokesperson for the Environment, Mr. Ruskell is leading the fight to end dog racing.
Bonnie Scotland, also known as Alba, is the second largest country in the United Kingdom and once had twenty tracks. Thornton Stadium is the last remaining facility. There are no humane requirements in place, which certainly explains why this unlicensed "flapper" track has refused to release injury and death information to the public! Joined by SAGE, Say No to Greyhound Racing in Scotland, Scotland for Animals, Animal Concern, the SSPCA, OneKind, the RSPCA, Dogs Trust, the League Against Cruel Sports Scotland and the Blue Cross, Mr. Ruskell has also raised particular concerns about cocaine-positive dogs.
Mark believes that all dogs deserve to live a full, happy life, free from the threat of injury or death. On October 6, he led a brilliant debate before Parliament and was joined by six other members across multiple parties in his motion to outlaw dog racing.
We applaud Mark for his courageous advocacy! Stay tuned for more news on this fast moving campaign. For the moment, please join us in thanking him for his leadership. Be sure to let Mr. Ruskell know your state and country and if you have a greyhound of your own. Then please follow him on FB, Twitter and Instagram.
Thank you for caring about the greyhounds far and wide!
Christine A. Dorchak, Esq.
